Birthday Wishes

Hi guys!

This one was sort of a special request. It was suggested to me to make more birthday cards and when I looked back over the past year at what I had made… I think I saw like two birthday cards! Yikes! So okay, here goes:

This design was inspired by two things, a “Stars” design challenge on Simon Says Stamp’s blog, here, and a new purchase. I had just picked up a Sizzix die set called Baby Jungle Animals (designed by Jordan Caderao) and wanted to use it right away.

With the giraffes’ long neck and a stars theme, I put them together and saw a streaky night sky with falling stars. I used two Nuvo shimmer powders for the sky, saturated the watercolor paper with water, sprinkled the powder and tilted it down for the streaking effect. After it was dry I used a little Black Soot Distress ink and a blender to darken the top of the card. For the sand dunes I had to get creative because I don’t currently have any border dies that make “land” or snow mounds so I used a Pink and Main stitched oval die set and a few different shades of Oxide ink to make sand dune shapes.

The giraffe was easy peasy to die cut, ink up and adhere together. I used a die set from Mama Elephant, that I love so much, called Stitched Sky for the moon. And the stars were from a Sizzix die set called Witchcraft. (If you’re into Halloween crafting, this one has the Best witch!). Glued everything together and called it a day.

Thanks so much for stopping by! If you have any questions just leave a comment and I’ll get right back to you.

Your background using the Nuvo shimmer powders turned out fantastic! I haven’t been brave enough to purchase any and try them yet, but after seeing what you did with them I’m thinking I might have to change that. This card is so cute and the sand dunes look like they were always met to be. Thanks for sharing this.

I LOVE using the paint powders to play with. Alcohol ink stumps me, but the paint powders (which includes Nuvo shimmer powders as well as Artsy Insfusions) I’ve got down pat. Go figure.

Hey Amanda! I didn’t even see this comment until now. Sneaky! This project was so easy and fun, too easy maybe… I’ll probably make it more complicated (and frustrating) should I try it again. Just being honest. Thank you so much for looking around and leaving a kind comment!
