Let’s get to the card! I made a card using the new, so lovely, Bold Bird Branches embossing folder and cutting die. I thought this design was perfect for an anniversary card! I love the embossed die-cut birds and already have plans for more cards with them.

- I started with a 4 1/2 in. X 5 3/4 in. panel of white cardstock, so that after the embossing, which can shrink a card panel by a tiny bit, my embossed panel would still fit on an A2-sized cardbase.
- I grabbed a Distress Oxide ink pad in Cracked Pistachio and ran it over the side of the embossing folder where the design depressed into the flap, not the bumpy side. I made sure not to worry about being precise or careful, but ran the ink pad a little quickly, so that I might see the swipe marks on the cardstock. (I’m not always very good with being “precise” or “centered and even”, or “clean” when it comes to cardmaking… so that’s when I lean into a casual arty look. 😉)
- I placed my paper in the folder and ran it through my die-cutting machine, using just the platform and a metal shim sandwich. (If you haven’t embossed with Simon’s embossing folders yet, I recommend you practice on a few spare pieces of paper to make sure you have the right sandwich for you.)
- Then I die-cut the birds from gold specialty paper and placed them in the embossing folder too.
- I found some bubble gum pink mesh ribbon in a big tangled mess of ribbons in my stash. I do not recommend storing any strips of ribbon loose in a drawer; they will form themselves into a big, messy ball. And glued a strip of it onto my card base, and cut off anything that overhangs.
- I cut the inked and embossed panel down a bit, wrapped some lilac ribbon over it. I taped the ribbon ends on the back side of the panel.
- I used Simon’s Big Momma foam tape to add just a little dimension to my inked panel and glued it to the card base, making sure to let the pink mesh show through.
- I stuck the gold, embossed birds down with more foam tape.
- I used Simon Says Stamp’s Music stamp set for an adorable anniversary sentiment.
- And then I used Trinity Stamps black rhinestones for some contrast. Simon also has black embellishments that would work beautifully.

There’s such creative freedom to a design style like this for card making. I love how interesting a card can be with the added layers of textures and colors.
I hope this has inspired you to make something new today. Thanks so much for stopping by!
-Anne

Beautiful card. Love birds as an anniversary card.
Thank you, Lila!
Oh my gosh – right? What happens to ribbon when it’s put into a drawer? The moment the drawer shuts, the ribbon turns into THE BIGGEST ball of a tangled mess – second cousin to getting bubble gum stuck in the long hair of a 7-year-old! Ha! I’m relieved to know that I’m not alone with the ribbon tangled blues! Beautiful card! Love the ink swipes on the embossing folder!
Yes, exactly! Thanks so much, Stephanie!

Very pretty! I know what you mean about storing ribbon. I now have them wound around a little piece of cardboard and tape the loose end down!
Oh, I think I can do that! Thanks, Patty!
I love the use of ribbon under the birds. This is definitely something I could create (once someone gives me the idea). lol

Love your golden birds–and a beautiful background too!
Thank you, Donna!
Gorgeous creation – I love the embossing. I am not always perfect with my stuff either, so I know what you mean about the artsy look… hee hee I feel like Bob Ross sometimes “Well, we’ll just turn that into a tree right there….” LOL
And I don’t think there is ANY good way to store ribbon! The struggle is real. 🙂
Ha! Love me some Bob Ross! Thank you, Jenn!
Beautiful card! Love the colors you chose, Anne. Thanks for sharing.
I’m so glad you like it!
This is such a unique and interesting card design!
I am so glad to see paper craft designers using ribbon again. Yes, it’s a hassle to store it, and I’ve had the exact same experience with my ribbon getting all tangled up and making a mess (my yarn, too, for that matter).
But I realized something when I was looking back at my old scrapbook pages a few days ago. The pages where I used ribbon all still look lovely years later. The pages where I used washi tape are a mess, because the washi tape, more often than not, came unstuck or unpeeled.
I don’t know how my cards have held up in the long term, but yikes, what if the washi tape comes unpeeled from a card you sent to a loved one? Why take the chance, right?
Oh, I didn’t know that about washi tape. I’ve always loved some ribbon or string on a card. Is that old fashioned? Thanks so much, Amy!
Sweet card with birds and a beautiful background!
Thank you!
